Tea with Clarinda
June 12, 13, 20, 27 / July 3, 4
Dumfries and Galloway (Gatehouse of Fleet, Moffat, Moniaive, Dumfries); Borders (Selkirk); Lothian (Edinburgh)
Tea With Clarinda is a play with music, about a meeting which is supposed to have taken place between Jean Burns, Burns's widow, and Nancy McLehose aka Clarinda, with whom Burns had a romantic friendship. The two women are supposed to have met only once, about 25 years after Burns's death, in the house of publisher George Thomson in Edinburgh. No-one knows what happened at that meeting, and the play is a fictional representation of what might have happened when 'the wife' met 'the other woman', bearing in mind that this was in an era when good manners were paramount! The play is by Anna Hillis, with songs by Burns, and two songs by Nancy herself.
