Pitlochry Highland Games

If strength, speed, agility and skill are the corner stones of Highland games, then all of these will be on display in the picturesque Perthshire town of Pitlochry on Saturday 12 September 2009.

Pitlochry Highland Games are a premier end-of-season event hosting the finals of a number of competitions. In 2009 this will include the British tug of war championships. A wide range of track and field competitions take place during the day as well as the traditional highland games favourites of tossing the caber, throwing the hammer and putting the stone. Traditional highland dancing, pipe band and solo piping competitions are also popular at Pitlochry.

Then day begins at 11 am with a parade of massed pipe bands through the heart of Pitlochry, a colourful music spectacular enjoyed by the many spectators who line the streets. Even this event is judged professionally with the 20-plus bands for traditional prizes.

Highland games may well date back as far as the 11th century. However, the modern games are mainly a Victorian creation that seek to showcase aspects of Scottish and Celtic cultural heritage.

Apart from two short breaks during world wars, Pitlochry Highland Games have been hosting competitors and enthralling spectators since 1852.
