James Thompson - Highlander in Quebec
This exhibition tells the story of James Thompson who left Tain in 1757 to join the newly raised 78th Frasers Highlanders. He found himself in Canada where he survived the two largest sieges of the Seven Years War in North America and fought in two of the bloodiest battles, emerging without a scratch.
After the regiment was disbanded Thompson chose to stay in Quebec. He went on to take charge of the Engineers' Department responsible for, among other things, the construction and maintenance of military and government buildings in the city of Quebec. He lived to the ripe old age of 97. Later in the year Lieutenant Colonel Ian McCulloch, a renowned military historian from Canada, will be presenting a talk at the museum entitled A Bard of Wolfe's Army: The Oral Memoirs of James Thompson, Gentleman Volunteer, 1757-1763".
James Thompson's story is typical of so many Highland lads who left their homeland to make their way in the world. The difference is Thompson's prodigious memories were written down by his son and have enabled his story to be told. In the Year of Highland Homecoming this exhibition celebrates the life and achievements of one man but throws light on the people who made that journey with him.
