In the Footsteps of the Reivers
The 15th Scottish Borders Walking Festival celebrates the lively and often colourful history of the Border Reivers. From the early fourteenth century to the early seventeenth century, the Scottish Borders experienced a period of intense conflict. Warfare eventually bred lawlessness and in order to survive, many ordinary Borderers were forced to turn to a life of "reiving" - cross border raids to steal. 'In the Footsteps of the Reivers' is a 9-day festival of themed walks and a full programme of social events exploring the distinctive landscape that was home to the Border Reivers taking in the stunning scenery surrounding Jedburgh and Hawick and including Denholm, Newcastleton and the Cheviot Hills.
This year's festival boasts over 60 walks, from a 2 mile stroll through the lovely gardens of a country house on the banks of the River Teviot, to a challenging 14 mile hike from a 16th century castle. You can also take a journey back into your own ancestral past, with the unique opportunity to test your DNA and the chance to search through the fascinating archives held at the Heritage Hub, in Hawick. If you simply can't stop walking, then how about trying it using Nordic Walking poles, or with a camera in your hand, or even over hot coals? As well as a full diary of social events, there are also plenty of opportunities to explore the best the Scottish Borders has to offer.
