Renfrewshire Homecoming Scotland 2009 Programme

What's on in Renfrewshire for Homecoming - local events

Renfrewshire lies just west of Glasgow, Scotland's most vibrant city on the south bank of the Clyde.  Renfrewshire has a rich history, a beautiful landscape and a warm welcome for you.  Paisley, Scotland's largest town, is the heart of our area. The medieval Paisley Abbey is at the town's centre.  If your name is Stewart or Stuart, then this magnificent Abbey is the ancestral home of your family.Paisley Abbey

Once the centre of threadmaking by J&P Coats Ltd., the town has a wonderful inheritance of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. If your family has links with the company, a visit to the town is a must!

Paisley Town Hall

Paisley is known the world over for its fabulous shawls and Paisley pattern. While the pattern originated elsewhere, Paisley's eighteenth and nineteenth century weavers cornered the market in these "must have" fashion items, so that throughout the English speaking world the floral teardrop pattern is known as "paisley". To see how the weavers lived, visit the Sma' Shot Cottages.

William Wallace, Scotland's hero of the Wars of Independence is said to have been born in Elderslie, just west of Paisley. Visit the traditional site of his home, perhaps on Wallace Day August 22nd when members of the Society of William Wallace parade with pipers and flags to commemorate Wallace's death in London.

Renfrewshire is easy to get to. Land at Glasgow International Airport and you're here!
