Refugee Week Scotland 2009

Refugee Week Scotland (15-21 June 2009) has become a partner event in Homecoming Scotland this year, as it launches its theme of ‘Home’.
From film festivals to football tournaments, comedy nights to
carnivals, exhibitions, workshops, parties and much, much more, Refugee
Week Scotland is an exciting programme of events happening across the
country to celebrate diversity and raise awareness of refugee issues.
Prominent Scots will meet with fascinating and enterprising refugees on May 27th to help launch their exciting programme for 2009. They’ll be discussing the idea of home – and sharing anecdotes about what home means to them.
Fancy taking part? You can watch their special video and then tell them what Home means to you on
their website.
Fuad Warsame, who came to Scotland from Somalia and is now studying to become an engineer, said: “The opportunities in Scotland are for everybody. I like that attitude, it’s really unique.
“I believe that in any other country in the world I wouldn’t be in the position that I’m in now... Scotland is really special. It will be my home forever.”
Refugee Week Scotland runs across the country from June 15-21. For more details go to

Writing Home
Scottish PEN has invited poetry and prose from refugees, asylum seekers, and those whose first language is not English to appear alongside the work of a few professional writers who are members of Scottish PEN in an on-line showcase to mark Refugee Week. The writing, inspired by the theme of 'Home', will be posted on both the Scottish Refugee Council and Scottish PEN websites from 15th June 2009.
