Day Three
Hill of Tarvit, near Cupar in Fife, is a beautiful Edwardian mansion house with a sunken rose garden set amidst the gentle Fife countryside. Built to the designs of Sir Robert Lorimer, this historic house boasts its very own 9-hole hickory golf course, open from June until the end of October, complete with hickory clubs, soft golf balls and original bags. Popular over a century ago, hickory golf is now making its comeback in Scotland and what better place than at Hill of Tarvit, a short drive from St. Andrews - the home of golf!
The delightful small tearoom also offers picnic hampers accompanied by an illustrated estate map so you can select your own idyllic spot within the property’s 40 acres of garden and rolling estate.
Within an easy 30-minute drive of Hill of Tarvit and a few miles from Pittenweem, is Kellie Castle, an ancient and reputedly haunted Scottish castle - the oldest tower dating back to 1360 - with an enchanting walled garden, woodland and meadow walks. The 6th Earl of Kellie was a famous composer, musician and ‘bon viveur’ of the Enlightenment. Famous for its Scottish furniture designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, beautiful 17th-century painted panelling and plasterwork ceilings, Kellie Castle also hosts an exquisite exhibition on the life and work of Scottish sculptor Hew Lorimer.
