Ceolas has been honoured by the confirmation that Sr Margaret MacDonell from Nova Scotia will be attending the symposium on Fr Allan Macdonald “Gaisgeach an t-sluaigh” / ‘Champion of the People’ in Eriskay 12-15th July. This high profile event has attracted people from across the globe.

Sr Margaret and her brother Fr Malcolm have been steadfast in supporting Gaelic in Nova

Scotia and through their commitment to the language have acquired a large correspondence with other Gaelic Scholars in Canada, USA and Scotland. Their contribution to the keeping Gaelic on the curriculum in the Universities in North America should not be underestimated. The correspondence covers a period of almost 70 years with the best known Gaelic scholars. Sr Margaret at the Rannsachadh nan Gaidheal in 2008 read a letter from a Fr William about the inspiration that Fr Allan MacDonald gave to Alexander Carmichael in his work.

The other speakers at the symposium will be broadcasters, Angela MacKinnon and Jo MacDonald, Canna House Collection: Hugh Cheape and Magda Zagarazazu, Dr. R Campbell on the medical conditions at the time, Isabel T MacDonald will do a workshop on the hymns and Fr Michael MacDonald will provide insight into Fr Allan’s Priestly life as well as lead the excursion to Uist. The symposium will be opened by Eriskay’s Freeman of the Western Isles: Fr Calum MacLellan.
