somebodyelse - An exhibition of work by Graham Fagen

Graham Fagen is one of Scotland's foremost contemporary artists.

Much of Graham Fagen's work revolves around the ways that contemporary identity, and its associated fictions, can be expressed and interrogated. He explores the matrix of personal and cultural influences on the individual.

The theme relates to the location of the exhibition venue and its historic context close to Stirling Castle. The work looks at how historic figures are portrayed and, in turn, characterised within wider historical narratives as familiar respresentations.

This exhibition of new and existing photographic work includes selected portraits of real, imagined and historic figures, brought together to explore ideas in relation to Scotland's contemporary and historical culture.

I Murder Hate - An Adrian Sherwood and Graham Fagen collaboration

Adrian Sherwood is a record producer best known for having produced and remixed albums by Depeche Mode, Primal Scream and Sinéad O’Connor, to name but a few. He has also worked with a number of reggae / dub legends including Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Bim Sherman. He also owns the music label On-U-Sound Records best known for releasing its own unique flavour of dub music since the 1980s.

Most recently, Sherwood received acclaim for the original reggae score he created for the 2006 independent film, ‘Johnny Was’ starring Vinnie Jones and Roger Daltrey.

The Tolbooth has commissioned Sherwood to write a new work to be performed as part of The Blend Festival 2009, and as a response to the national Homecoming celebrations with inspiration for the new music partially deriving from selected poetry of Robert Burns.

For the commission Sherwood will work closely and in collaboration with visual artist Graham Fagen who will also be showing a new exhibition of his work at The Changing Room gallery at Tolbooth. The exhibition will coincide with the performance at the Blend festival and gives a wider context to the commission.

Sherwood and Fagen have previously worked together on a project looking at the connections between Burns' politics in his poetry and contemporary culture, specifically Jamaican culture and the slave trade. Their Auld Lang Syne c/w The Slaves Lament and Downpresser project in 2005 was the stepping stone to this new commission. Fagen has selected Burns’ poetry that is most relevant and evocative to the new work and Sherwood will use these poems as the inspiration for his ideas to be performed live in this special event with a fantastic group of performers including Ghetto Priest, Skip McDonald, Peter Lockett and Little Roy.
