The Comet Festival Saturday 22nd August 2009

The Port Glasgow Comet Festival will take place on Saturday 22 August 2009 from 12 noon until 5pm. The gala day extravaganza takes place at the town’s Coronation Park this year and promises plenty of fun and entertainment for the whole family.

The celebrations start with the crowning of this year’s Comet Festival King and Queen. Youngsters from the town were given the chance to apply for the Royal honours through a competition run jointly by the festival, Inverclyde Council and the Greenock Telegraph.

Central to the event will be a roadshow hosted by Your Radio and featuring a sparkling line-up of entertainers. Among the singers and dancers taking the stage will be Megastars performers Thomas and Jodie, Sophie Binnie, Michael Frizzell, and Nicola McCready. Irish dancers Onesti Irish Dance and Inverclyde Breakers break-dancing group will also join the cast at the roadshow who will entertain the crowds from noon until 4pm.

After that, local musicians, The McKinley Folk Band take to the stage with some traditional music and songs. Strathclyde Fire and Rescue will be there with their vintage appliances and visitors can also see round a state-of-the-art fire engine.

Children have the chance to learn circus skills with the help of Big Top Entertainment, who are also running bubble workshops. Portraits by caricaturist Bill Stewart make a novel keepsake or gift.

Throughout the day, Cameron Codona’s funfair will provide thrills for all the family. Snacks, drinks and ice cream will be available throughout the day.A cafe-type seating area is planned for the walkway next to the event.
