Bo’ness Homecoming Finale - To Bo’ness & Beyond, The Hippodrome Cinema & Bo’ness Foreshore Fireworks Display  

Thursday 26 November to Sunday 29 November

 

This mini festival over the St Andrews Day weekend sees the relaunched Bo’ness Hippodrome screen five very different films, each shining a spotlight on something Scottish we hold dear.  A fireworks and music spectacular on the Bo'ness foreshore, a short stroll from the Hippodrome, rounds off the Homecoming celebrations on Sunday, November 29 at 9.30pm.

 

The programme of films is as follows:

Thursday 26 November, 8pm, The Best Day of the Year: 100 Years of the Bo’ness Children’s Fair – Louis Dickson’s digitised archive film footage interspersed with fascinating personal stories and recollections of the Fair dating back to the 1940s, alongside interviews with people involved in the preparations leading up to the 2007 Fair.

 

Friday 27 November, 8pm, The 39 Steps – Alfred Hitchcocks’s classic featuring the Forth Bridge.

 

Saturday 28 November, 11am, Dragonheart – animation featuring the voice of Sean Connery as the smooth talking dragon

 

Saturday 28 November, 8pm, Gregory’s Girl – BAFTA winning comedy filmed in Cumbernauld, one of the best-loved Scottish films ever  

 

Sunday 29 November, 8pm, I Know Where I’m Going – Featuring the Isle of Mull and the Corryvreckan whirlpool, this British classic has been described as  a masterpiece by Martin Scorsese.

BIG ROMAN WEEK - SEPTEMBER 14 TO 20, 2009

 

Community groups in Bo'ness are working together to run a "Big Roman Week" to mark the birthday of Emperor Antoninus Pius

who built his Roman frontier (a World Heritage Site) through Kinneil and Bo’ness. An Italian Market, talks and other events are planned. The 2009 Week runs from September 14 to 20. Full details at www.kinneil.org.uk/bigromanweek

Discover Roman artefacts in Kinneil Museum, Kinneil Estate, Bo’ness. During The Big Roman Week: special activities for children.

Play Roman board games or design your own personalised Roman coin.

Suitable for children aged 5 to 12 years. All children must be accompanied by a supervisory adult. Museum open Monday to Saturday from 12.30 p.m. to 4 p.m. (and on Sunday, September 20, for Kinneil Heritage Day). Free.

TALK: The Bridgeness Slab. Find out about Bo’ness Community Council’s plans to bring a full-size replica of the Bridgeness Slab one of the best Roman relics in Britain to the town. Barbara Davidson Pottery in Larbert has just announced the manufacture of a new full colour printed bone china mug to coincide with the celebrations to commemorate 250 years since the birth of Robert Burns and Homecoming Scotland 2009.  

       

It features the watercolours of Ken Lockhead, depicting Kirk Alloway, Burns' Cottage, Brig O'Doon, the Haggis, Poppies and a portrait of the Bard.  On the inside of the mug are the words of "The Selkirk Grace". This special mug complements Barbara's standard range of Robert Burns mugs and glasses, which have verses from the Bard's most popular songs, along with a simple portrait.

Bo'ness Real Ale Festival, Bo'ness Town Hall
2 and 3 October 2009

Bo'ness offers a warm Homecoming welcome to real ale lovers from all over the world. This two day event will offer visitors the chance to sample more than two dozen real ales, all sourced from across Central Scotland.  The proceeds from the event will go to local charities and good causes.  Last year's event was run as part of the Fringe celebrations for the Royal National Mod.
